Meet the Governors - roles and responsibilities

Name: Jennie Hulse

Category of Governor : Chair of Governors and Co-opted Governor

Term of Office: 25/09/25 to 24/09/29

Responsibilities: EYFS Governor, Curriculum Committee Chair, Pay Committee Chair

Jennie Hulse is the Chair of Governors at College Town and before that held the position of Vice Chair. She has been part of the Governing Body since 2021 and has worked alongside many governors and staff to support the aims of the school.

She has twins who previously attended College Town and was also a former pupil of the school herself. She has spent several years being part of the PTA and still tries to be involved with helping to raise funds for the school.

Name: David Spence

Category of Governor: Vice Chair and Co-opted Governor

Responsibilities: Staffing and Finance Chair, Pay Committee, HTPM

Term of Office: 30/09/24 to 29/09/28

I have a long association with College Town, and was previously a governor of the school in 2012, for seven years; I then had to take a break whilst overseas. I have a background in the military and graduated from the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, spending over a decade in various operational roles. I retired from the post of Major, to take up a career in Human Resources. In my current role, I am the Chief Growth Officer for a European Staffing and Workforce Management Company. As a father to three boys that have all attended College Town, I am pleased to offer support, guidance and expertise to the school.

 

Name: Trudi Sammons MA
Category of Governor: Headteacher
Term of office: Governor since September 2008

Trudi Sammons was appointed as Headteacher of College Town Infant and Nursery School in 2009. She later fulfilled the same role in the amalgamated College Town Primary School. She attends all the committee meetings, has full voting rights and is an experienced headteacher and Ofsted Inspector.

 

Name: Cheryl Bentley

Category of Governor: LA Governor

Term of Office: 15/05/23 to 14/05/27

Responsibilities: Child Protection, Safeguarding (including online safety), HTPM

My husband Karl and I moved to Crowthorne in 2004 and bought our first home in Sandhurst in 2005. We have spent the past 13 years living happily here and raising our family. We love the local area.

I am a mother of three children, one of whom attends College Town Primary School. Having previously worked as a Teaching Assistant and in day nurseries, I am an Ofsted registered childminder. I work with lots of families within the local community. 


Name: Fiona Mitchell
Category of Governor : Staff Governor, Pastoral Care

Term of Office :16/06/2023 to 15/06/27

I was very happy to take on the role of Staff Governor when an opportunity arose. As an existing member of staff, I have a unique insight into the activities and running of the school. I aim to represent the views of teaching staff and pupils at College Town and share these openly and honestly with the Governing Body. As a Staff Governor, I can work in partnership with other governors to support the strategic development of the school. 

 

Name: Sarah Hale

Responsibilities: Inclusion: SEND, Pupil Premium, Equality

Term of Office: 12/05/25 to 11/05/29

I have worked in adult education and learning for over ten years. I am currently employed in an academic post at a university offering courses for adult learners. From my experience of working in education and from my own life experiences, I know how important a quality start in education is for children. I am excited to be supporting College Town as a governor. 

 

Name: Sam Young

Category of Governor: Co-opted Governor

Responsibilities: Development Governor, Pay Committee

Term of Office: 05/02/24 to 04/02/28

This is my first role as a school governor. I have taken on the responsibility in order to gain a better understanding of the education system and to offer my expertise in HR and recruitment. Outside this role, I am a father of two young boys. Professionally, I am a Director at a publicly listed Executive Search company working with clients within the retail and consumer goods sector.

 

Name: Natalie Warner

Category of Governor: Parent Governor

Responsibilities: Staff and Pupil Well-Being

Term of Office: 28/11/24 to 27/11/28

I decided to become a Parent Governor as I have two children that attend College Town. I have always strived to support the school as much as I can by volunteering to hear children read, attending school visits and by being a part of the PTA, in order to raise funds that support our children. As a Mental Health First Aid instructor, I am passionate about ensuring that the well-being of staff and children is a priority and, as a result, our little people thrive and grow in confidence to become the best they can be! It is a privilege to be working alongside the school as a governor.

Name: Rita Carvosso

Category of Governor: Associate Member

Responsibilities: Curriculum Committee – strategic direction

Term of Office: 30/09/25 to 29/09/26

My career in education spans forty years, including being a headteacher in schools in France and Germany, a period of time as Assistant Director of Service Education and previously as Chair of Governors at College Town. Now my husband and I are retired, we spend time with our grandchildren and enjoy the opportunity to travel. I have re-joined the governors as an Associate Member and advise on curriculum matters and strategic direction. I consider supporting the school a privilege.

 

Staff Governors and Parent Governors are elected by a ballot of the communities they represent and LA (Local Authority) and Co-opted Governors are appointed by the Governing Body.
