Welcome to Sparrowhawk Class

Welcome to Sparrowhawk's! 

I am so excited about our year together! I can't wait to see how much you learn and grow this year! I can already tell we are going to have a fabulous year!

In English, we will begin by reading Robot Girl by Malorie Blackman, a Sci-Fi book about a girl called Claire  and how she deals with having a famous inventor for a father. We will be using the story to help us write our own Sci-Fi narrative story using speech and lots of description. After three weeks of fiction writing, we will then switch to non-fiction writing about a very famous daredevil, Phillippe Petit, and explore his adventures and his famous tricks before writing a biography all about him. This will use organisational writing like paragraphs and subheadings. 

In Maths, we will be investigating place value, learning to read, write and partition numbers all the way up to 1,000,000. We will then order and compare numbers based off different features. Once we have mastered the numbers, we will then have a go at adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing those numbers! We will add and subtract numbers with more than four digits before we look into prime, square and cube numbers. 

This term in Science, we will be exploring materials and how we can separate different mixtures based on their properties. 

Our Humanities' topic this half-term is History and we are exploring The Vikings. Any research the children want to complete at home will help excite them and stretch their learning/ understanding even more!

Our homework this half-term will be based on the Vikings. This will be handed out on the second Friday of the half-term in their purple books with their KIRFs and will be due the second to last Friday of half-term. This half-term homework is due on the 16th of October. 

Spellings will be sent out every Friday, with a quiz on the following Friday. Please continue to encourage the children to practise their spellings using their word lists in their yellow books. We will also have their tests in their so you can see how well they have done. At the beginning of every year we have a go at our statutory spelling words, your children have been sent home with a blank list and a list with words they specifically need to practise so please hang it up for all to see and have a go, little and often is the best way to practise our spellings. 

Reading: Please read at home as frequently as possible. I would appreciate it if the children were reading at least twice a week at home. Reading is incredibly important and it is so fun listening to the children read, even if it's whilst your cooking/ completing everyday tasks. 

MyMaths: Homework is also set every Friday and is due the following Friday.

PE is scheduled for every Monday and our focus this term is hockey, so children should come dressed appropriately. This means completely plain black hoodies/jumpers without logos or decals, plain white tops and sensible trainers. This is especially important as we will be spending as much time as we can outside and on the field (as long as the weather allows us!). Sensible shoes help reduce injury/ accidents so please wear sensible shoes.
