Red Deer
Welcome to Red Deer Class!
Welcome back to the new school year. I hope you have all had a wonderful summer with your friends and family, I am looking forward to hearing about the things that you have been doing.
This year we are going to be learning lots of new and exciting things, and I am looking forward to the journey that we will take together.
In English, we are going to be exploring the book 'The Wilderness' by Steve McCarthy. We will learn about what it will be like to be fearless adventurers and use all that we have learnt to create our own guide to surviving in the wilderness. We will be using conjunctions to help us write multi-clause sentences, we will also write character descriptions, letters of advice and descriptive poems. Later in the half-term we will spend some time looking at poetry before moving on to write a newspaper report focusing on the events described in the book 'Escape from Pompeii' by Christina Balit.
In Maths, we will be starting the year revisiting our knowledge of Place Value, before extending our learning to look at numbers with hundreds, tens and ones. We will look at how numbers are represented, including the different ways this happens, how to partition numbers and how to use resources such as numberlines, counters and base 10 to calculate the value of a number and show it in relation to other numbers.
In Year 3, our foundation subjects are usually taught in the afternoon, and we block teach our subjects. Music, Spanish, PSHE and PE are all taught weekly. This half-term we will be starting with Science where we will be studying the unit 'Movement and Nutrition' where we will learn about the bones in the body, muscles and the nutrition needed to keep our bodies healthy. In Computing we will start by reminding ourselves how to stay safe online and then start to think about how computer network work. In RE we will be learning more about Christianity. We will look at some of the stories that are important to Christians. Later in the half term we will spend time exploring volcanoes in Geography. We will look at what a volcano is, how it is formed and why people choose to live in area around volcanoes. Finally we will focus on developing our drawing slills in Art. In PE our focus will be on learning the skills of hockey. We will learn passing and stopping the ball, shooting and scoring, before moving on to playing simple games. In Spanish we will start with the greetings to use at different times of the day and in different situations.
On the main year group page, you will find the weekly spelling homework, this half-term's homework and where to find websites that might be useful when completing this, as well as a document that has the website links for several sites that you can access and the children can play maths games that will help them to develop their fluency and enable them to recall quickly key information such as number bonds and timetables.
If you have any questions, please speak to me in the playground either before or after school.
Many thanks,
Miss Holloway and Mrs Ross :)
