Squirrel

Welcome to Squirrel Class

Hello and welcome back to Autumn 2. I hope you had a restful half term break and are excited to continue your learning this half term.

English:

In English, we will be starting off the half term by reading 'Wolves' by Emily Gravett. During this sequence we will be looking at non-fiction texts and how these differ to fiction texts. We will be learning lots of new information about wolves and then use what we have learnt to write some non-chronological reports. We will then go on to look at poetry focusing on the poem 'The Owl and the Pussycat' by Edward Lear. During this sequence we will explore the themes of the poem, explore the characters thoughts and feelings and write in role, before ending the unit by writing our own versions of the poem. I am really excited to read the fantastic writing that you are going to produce this half term!

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we will begin the half term by continuing our addition and subtraction learning. We will be exploring different methods to help us add and subtract two 2-digit numbers crossing and not crossing 10. This is a tricky concept so try and practise your sums at home where you can. We will end the unit by comparing number sentences and finding missing numbers using the skills we have learnt. We will end the half term by completing a unit on shape. Here we will look at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes before looking at lines of symmetry in different shapes.

Topic

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be practising our dance skills in the hall.

In Georgraphy we will be learning all about Australia. We will start by labelling the states and territories of Australia before going on to compare the different states. This topic will lead into our art work where we will be creating aboriginal clay masks.

In Science, we will be continuing our unit on habitats. We will look at what a micro-habitat is and the characteristics of these habitats. We will be exploring the forest to see if we can find any micro-habitats

In RE, we will be looking at the religion of 'Christianty' where we will be exploring the Christmas story.

In music we will be practising our songs for our production, we cannot wait to see this come together!

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,

Miss Sanders
