Squirrel

Welcome to Squirrel Class

Hello and Happy New Year! I hope you had a lovely Christmas break and are looking forward to the Spring term!

English:

In English, we will be starting off the half term by reading 'The Bear and the Piano' by David Litchfield. During this unit we will be making predictions about what we think may happen in the story before investigating how the characters may be feeling. To end the unit we will be writing our own version of the story using different animals, settings and instruments. We will then go on to read 'The Journey Home' by Frann Preston-Gannon. Here we will be exploring the theme of  conservation. We will be looking at different sentence types and grammar rules before writing our own persuasvive letter to help the animals.

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we will begin the half term by starting our unit on Money! We will be exploring different coins and notes, making different amounts, comparing amounts and understanding how to find change. We will then move on to our topic of multiplication and division. Starting with grouping and sharing before looking at the 2s, 5s and 10s times tables.

Topic

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be practising our gymnastic skills in the hall.

In History we will be learning all about castles. We will be looking at different types of castles, their features and different jobs that people have in castles. We will be going on a very exciting trip to Windsor Castle on Friday 16th of January which I hope you are looking forward to!

In Science, we will be starting a unit on materials. Exploring different materials and their porperties.

In RE, we will be looking at the religion of 'Christianty'

In music we will be learning and performing the song 'Swing along with Shostakovivh'

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,

Miss Sanders
