 Welcome to Squirrel Class

I can't believe we are already in the last half term of the year. It has flown by!

English:

In English, our theme for the half term is 'Urban Metropolis'. We will begin by studying the book 'Last Stop on Market Street' by Matt de la Pena. We will explore the setting of the story by using our senses to describe a bus journey and write our own poetry. We will also discuss helping our local community by writing advice slips and discussing the ways in which we can support local initiatives. We will end this unit by writing our own versions of the story.

Our second book this half term will be 'Lizzy and the Cloud' by Eric and Terry Fan. We will use expanded noun phrases to describe the cloud seller, create market stall pitches and explore the links between weather and emotions. Finally, we will use all of the skills that we have been practising this year to write a guidebook for how to care for a cloud.

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we are finishing our learning on telling the time before moving on to Statistics. We will work practically to make tally charts, tables, block diagrams and pictograms. We will then explore different ways of interpreting our results. Finally, we will explore Position and Direction by using the language of position to describe movement and turns.

Foundation Subjects:

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be practising Athletics in preparation for Sports Day.

In Geography, we will explore different countries from around the world. We will discuss and compare France, China, Australia, France, Kenya, Antarctica and North and South America.

In Science, we will take part in Science Week by conducting our own experiments and showing them off in a Science Fair. We will then learn about how orange juice, bread and cheese are produced from field to table.

In RE, we will continue our learning on Sikhism. We will learn about Sikh festivals and places of worship, including visiting the new Gurdwara in Camberley!

In Art, we will use natural materials to create nature sculptures.

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,

Miss Wilkinson
