 Welcome to Squirrel Class

Welcome back! I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Easter break.

English:

In English, our theme for the half term is 'Fictional Worlds and Fantasy'. We will begin by studying the book 'The Dragon Machine' by Helen Ward. We will explore the thoughts and feelings of the characters by writing letters in role and diary entries, use our learning of expanded noun phrases from across the year to write descriptions of dragons and dragon machines, and finally write our own version of the story with our own fantasy machine and characters.

Our second book this half term will be 'Ocean Meets Sky' by Eric and Terry Fan. We will write letters to the characters, diary entries of exciting adventures to unknown lands, and finally create our own fantasy land. We will then write our own stories detailing the adventures of our characters as they visit each of our own fantasy lands.

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we are learning about Fractions. We will learn to recognise and find a half, a quarter, a third and two-quarters, and apply this knowledge to problem solving questions. Then, we will explore Time by reading the time on an analogue clock to quarter past/to, half past and at five-minute intervals to/past the hour.

Foundation Subjects:

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be practising Athletics and ball skills.

In History, we will be learning about what an explorer is and different explorers from the past and present.

In Science, we will learn about Humans, including the human life cycle, different food groups and how we can stay healthy.

In Computing, we will learn how to program BeeBots and make programs of our own.

In RE, we will begin our learning on Sikhism. We learn about some key figures in Sikhism, core beliefs and symbols, and festivals.

In DT, we are continuing our focus on healthy eating from our Science learning by designing and making our own fruit kebabs!

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,

Miss Wilkinson
