Squirrel

Welcome to Squirrel Class

Hello and welcome back to Spring 2! I hope you all had a lovely half term and are ready to continue our fantastic learning in Spring 2!

English:

In English, we will be starting off the half term by reading 'If all the world were....' by Joeseph Coelho. During this unit we will be exploring the theme of relationships. We will start the week by looking at some 'what if' questions and writing responses to these. We will then look at the main character's thoughts and feelings and write in role as this character. Towards the end of the week we will be writing noun phrases to describe our special items that we are going to bring in. The following week we  will apply our recent work into writing  a non-narrative poem with a focus on drawing upon the author’s language. Finally, after watching the author read one of his pieces, we will prepare our poems to read out loud and do so to an audience.

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we will begin the half term by staring our measurement unit. We will start by exploring length and height where we will be measuring in centimetres and meters, comparing different lengths and heights before using our knowledge of our four operations to answer questions relating to length and height. We will then move onto the unit of mass, capacity and temperature where we will be exploring the different units of measure and comparing these. We will be completing lots of practical activities to help secure our understanding. We will then end the term by completing our Spring term arithmetic and reasoning and problem solving test papers.

Topic

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be practising our racket and ball skills outside in the MSA.

In Geography we will be exploring the United Kingdom. We will look at the different countries in the UK and be comparing these to eachother.

In Science, we will be starting a unit on plants. We will be conducting an experiment to see what happens when we plant a seed in a glass jar as well as planting our own bulbs and observing these grow. I am looking forward to seeing your homework that is all about plants!

In RE, we will be looking at the religion of 'Christianty'

In music we will be learning and performing the song 'Trains'

Our PSHE leanring this half term is 'relationships'.

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,

Miss Sanders
