Welcome to Squirrel Class

Hello and welcome to Squirrel Class! I hope you had a wonderful summer holiday and are looking forward to starting year 2!

English:

In English, we will be taking part in a whole school unit related to the book 'Flooded' by Mariajo Ilustrasjo. We will be looking at how the animals are feeling about the flood and writing some thought bubbles using role play to help us. We will also be writing an explanation report using lots of different sentence types! Following on from this, we will be creating some whole-school artwork related to the story, we can't wait to have this out on display! We will then go on to read 'The Goldilocks Project' where we will be reading a range of different 'Goldilocks' stories with different twists and turns! The children will end the unit by writing their own version of the story. To conclude our half term the children will be reading 'Jim and the Beanstalk' written by Raymond Briggs, another fariytale with a twist! The children will be making predictions about what they think will happen in the story and then will look at comparing this story to the original! I am really exctied to see the fantastic writing that you produce this half term!

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we are going to start the half term by continuing our place value learning from year 1. We will be looking at the place value in numbers to 100 and will be looking at how we can build these numbers in different ways, we will end the unit by learning to count in 2s,5s,10s and 3s. We will end the half term by starting our unit on addition and subtraction.

Topic

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be practising our multi-ball skills in the MSA.

In History we will be learning about the History of Flight. Here we will learn lots of interesting facts about: The Wright Brothers, Amy Johnson and Samuel Cody.

In Science, we will be starting our unit on habitats. We will look at what a habitat is and the characteristics of these habitats. We will also be looking at which habitats different animals will live in.

In RE, we will start the term by looking at our 'Core unit'. Here we will be talking about communities and coming together, we will also be looking at how different religions celebrate key festivals in different ways.

In DT, we will be making our own moving viechels using Lego!

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,

Miss Sanders
