Rabbit

Welcome to Rabbit Class!

Welcome to Year 1. We are so excited to get to know you all and begin learning together in Rabbit Class. Here you will find out what we will be learning in the coming weeks of this half term.

In English we are beginning the year reading 'Cave Baby' which the children are all really enjoying!  Whilst reading 'Cave Baby' we will be learning about how to correctly write labels and captions as well as writing informal letters.  The 28th September to the 2nd October is National Poetry Week and the theme is 'wonder' so look out for lots of exciting work that week!  We will then be reading 'Yeti and the Bird' where we will be learning how to correctly write lists, letters, postcards and character descriptions.

In Maths this half term we will be focusing on place value.  We will be learning how to accurately sort and count out objects from a larger group.  Next we will be developing understanding that amounts can be represented in a variety of different ways including objects, pictures, words and numerals.  We will be learning how to count on from numbers, count forwards and backwards and use this knowledge to find one more and one less than a given number. Next we will learn how to recognise and use the symbols meaning 'greater than', 'less than' and 'equal to' and use these to compare numbers.  Finally we will be ordering objects and numbers and develop our understanding and use of the number line.

In Year One, our foundation subjects are all taught in the afternoon. Music, PSHE and PE are all taught weekly.  Our afternoon learning this half term will start with Art, with the topic, 'Drawing: Exploring Line and Shape'.  We'll create our own self-portraits in the style of Paul Klee. We will be learning about 'How I Am Making History' in History, using photographs to answer questions about the past. We will also be covering Science, Computing and RE. The Science will be about seasonal changes and hopefully we will take some of our learning outside on the school grounds to observe these in person. In Computing we will be improving our mouse skills and learning how to login and navigate around a computer while creating some digital art. In RE we will start thinking about Christianity and explore some stories from the faith.
