Spellings
Spelling Curriculum at College Town Primary
Key Stage 1 – Phonics and Spelling
In Key Stage 1, spelling is taught through phonics, following the Little Wandle scheme. All spelling lessons follow the familiar structure of Little Wandle phonics lessons, which help children make strong links to their phonics learning. These lessons build on prior knowledge, ensuring that children always start from a secure understanding of sounds and letters. As children progress, they continue to use their phonics skills to decode and spell words accurately.
Key Stage 2 – Spelling Shed
In Key Stage 2, we follow the Spelling Shed program to teach spelling. Spelling Shed is an interactive and engaging platform designed to support spelling development through a combination of visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles. The program uses a clear, systematic approach to teaching spelling patterns, ensuring that children develop a deep understanding of the rules behind spelling, as well as improving their vocabulary and confidence in writing.
The Spelling Shed pedagogy focuses on:
- Structured learning: Children are introduced to different spelling patterns and rules each week.
- Progressive development: Lessons are tailored to each child’s level of ability, providing appropriate challenges and helping them build on their spelling skills over time.
- Assessment and feedback: Children receive immediate feedback on their spelling, which helps them to improve and track their progress.
Together, these approaches ensure that spelling instruction at College Town Primary is both systematic and engaging, supporting children in developing essential literacy skills that will benefit them across all subjects.
