Design & Technology

Design and Technology at College Town

“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

Steve Jobs- co-founder of Apple, Inc

Design Technology is a creative, imaginative and practical subject. It involves two important elements - learning about the designed and made world and how things work, and learning how to design and make products for particular purposes and users.

At College Town, Design and Technology is taught in blocks each term, it develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food.

Children use these skills whilst working on specific topics to create different types of structures, for example they design and build a London Bridge during a KS1 topic about the city. Links between numerous other subjects are encouraged, including maths, science, reading and writing and there are strong links to art throughout. Where possible, we have parent technology days where parents are invited to come in to help support their children with making and building tasks.

The national curriculum for Design and Technology aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world

  • Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users

  • Analyze, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
