Squirrel

 Welcome to Squirrel Class

Hello Squirrels,

We have had a busy few weeks and you have all worked hard to create some fantastic work! I am very excited to see what else you can show me.

English:

In English, we will be using the story 'Jack and the Baked Beanstalk'  by Colin Stimpson to encourage our imaginations and create our own traditional tales with a twist.  The children will be thinking of adjectives and noun phrases to use to write descriptions of some of these characters before planning and creating their own versions..

Our English lessons will ensure children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluating their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

 Maths:

Our maths learning will be focusing on multiplication. We will be recognising, making an adding equal groups of objects before focusing on the multiplication symbol, making and using arrays and working on our 2, 3, 5 and 10 times tables to help us solve multiplication problems.

In our learning in our other subjects the Squirrels will be learning about different Materials in Science. They will look at what materials some objects are made from, the properties of those materials and  why those properties are important. In History they will also be finding about castles, the people who lived in them and the jobs they did. They will then use this knowledge to help them design and build their own castles in their DT lessons. Please can you collect any boxes and tubes that you think will help the children construct their castles, and if you are able, we would love to have you in school to help us with our castle building. We are doing this on the afternoons of Monday 30th January - Wednesday 1st February.

.

Our PSHE topic this half term is all about understanding our 'Dreams and Goals' and in Music our theme will be 'I wanna play in a band'.

On Thursday's we have our PE learning.  This half term we will be focusing on Gymnastics. We will be thinking about different ways to control our bodies and how to complete a set of moves and create a simple gymnastics routine.

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading journals and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the  library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can changes them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

Thank you,

Mrs Salter
