Squirrel

 Welcome to Squirrel Class

Hello Squirrels, it has been a busy couple of weeks and I have really enjoyed getting to know you all a little better. It has also been wonderful to see how hard you are all working and I'm sure that we will have a fantastic term.

English:

In English, we will be looking at the poetry. We will be using the poems '10 things found in  a Wizards pocket' and 'The Magic Box'  uto help us think about list poems. We will learn the poems and then create our own versions of them.

Our English lessons will ensure children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluating their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

 Maths:

Our Maths learning will still  be focusing on Place Value. We will be counting groups of objects, recognising different ways of representing the numbers using a variety of resources, using place value charts and part-whole models to help us partition numbers. We will then use number lines to help us count in tens and ones as well as recording our answers in words as well as numerals.

In our learning in our other subjects the Squirrels will be learning about the importance of being safe on the internet and some of the things we can do to keep ourselves and others safe and happy when using computers. We will then move on to our Science topic for this half term which is animals and their habitats. The children will learn how we identify and classify things as living, non-living and never been alive. They will think about what humans and animals need to survive, what food chains are and some of the different habitats that animals live in. In music our topic is "Hands, Feet, Heart" and we will be listening to different pieces of music to help us think about what we enjoying listening to and why. The children will be  trying to identify the different instrument they can hear as well as making rhythms using tuned and untuned percussion instruments.

We will also still be finding time to talk about our topic in PSHE; "Being me in my world". As a class we will discuss our hopes and worries for the new school year, we will also think about the rights and responsibilities we have in our learning environment.

On Thursday we have our PE learning.  This term we will be focusing on learning some general balls skills and finding out about different ways to control different types of balls.

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading journals and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the  library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can changes them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

Thank you,

Mrs Salter
