 Welcome to Squirrel Class

Welcome back to school after the Christmas holidays! I hope you all had a fantastic break and feel rested and excited about our learning this half term. We have lots of new and interesting topics coming up, including our trip to Windsor Castle and an afternoon of making our own cardboard castles!

English:

In English, we our theme for the half term is 'bravery vs. fear'. We will begin by exploring 'The Bear Under the Stairs' by Helen Cooper. We will explore the thoughts and feelings of the characters by writing letters in role and then write our own version of the story with our own characters. Finally, we will learn about real-life bears in more detail by writing our own non-chronological reports.

Our second book this half term will be 'The Bear and the Piano' by David Litchfield. We will write some newspaper reports and create information posters about characters that we have created ourselves. We will finish this unit by writing our own version of the story.

Our English lessons will ensure the children can do the following:

  • Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
  • Evaluate their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
  • Proof-read to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).

Maths:

In Maths, we are learning about Money where we will learn to recognise the different coins and notes used in the UK. We will practise calculating with money and finding change from different amounts.

Later in the half term, we will begin our learning about Multiplication and Division. We will start by recognising and making equal groups before using arrays to support our calculations of multiplication sentences for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Foundation Subjects:

On Thursdays we have our PE learning. This half term we will be exploring gymnastics.

In History, we are learning about castles and their features, as well as the people that live there and jobs inside a castle. We will finish this learning with an exciting trip to Windsor Castle to see our learning brought to life!

In Science, we will explore different materials and their properties. We will look at man-made and natural materials, and have discussions about why different objects are made from certain materials.

In RE, we will continue our learning about Christianity by focusing on the Bible and its importance for Christians. We will explore the role of Jesus and his disciples, and some of the stories in the Bible.

In DT, we will design and create our own castles made from cardboard!

Helpful Reminders:

  • Please make sure your child has their reading record and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.

  • Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.

  • We will be visiting the Library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can change them and choose different stories to share with you at home.

  • To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.

  • If you would like some suggestions to find information for the children's homework then please look at the links listed below.

Thank you,
