Squirrel
Welcome to Squirrel Class
Wow Squirrels! What a busy half term we are having. You have been working so hard but we have also had lots of fun, especially during our celebrations of the King's Coronation
Here are some of the other exciting things we have to do this half term:
English:
In English, we are using the book 'The Tear Thief' by Carol Ann Duffy to understand what a simile is. We will identify the similes in the book and then create some of our own to describe images we have been given. We will also think of questions that we could ask the Tear Thief before writing a Diary Entry based on the story.
We will then be read the book 'Leaf' by Sandra Dieckmann and from this book we will move on to research facts about polar bears and then create our own fact files.
Our English lessons will ensure children can do the following:
- Consider what they are going to write before beginning.
- Evaluating their writing with the teacher and other pupils.
- Proof-reading to check for errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Learn how to use both familiar and new punctuation correctly, including full stops, capital letters, exclamation marks, question marks, commas for lists and apostrophes for contracted forms and the possessive (singular).
Maths:
In Maths, we are learning about time. The children will be revisiting their previous learning on telling the time to the o'clock and half past of an hour before learning about telling the time to the quarter past and quarter to the hour and to the nearest 5 minutes.
In our learning in our other subjects the squirrels will be learning how to program a Beebot to follow a route around a series of objects. They will also learning how to 'debug' a program they have been given. Finally they will use the laptops to complete a series of challenges and write their own instructions and create a program to move characters around a computer program. In our DT learning the children will be designing their own fruit kebabs before making them. They will then evaluate them and think about any changes they would make if they could make them again.
Our PSHE topic this half term is all about understanding our 'Healthy Me' and will support the learning that the children will be doing in both Science and Design and Technology. This half term the theme of their Music lessons is 'Friendship'.
On Thursday's we have our PE learning. This half term we will be focusing on Athletics and Ball Skills. We will be using last half terms learning to help us find different ways to control balls using a variety of different size balls and other equipment such as tennis rackets. This will include working in teams to work on our throwing and catching skills .We will then be using these skills to help us develop our running an jumping to enable us to compete in Athletics competitions against each other.
Helpful Reminders:
Please make sure your child has their reading journals and a labelled water bottle in school every day and that their jumpers are clearly labelled.
Our PE day this year will be every Thursday. The children should come to school in their PE kits on a Thursday.
We will be visiting the library on Thursday afternoons. Please can children bring their library books in on Thursdays so that they can changes them and choose different stories to share with you at home.
To minimise the risk of lost property, we ask that all clothing items are clearly labelled with a name, even PE kit items.
Thank you,
Mrs Salter
